More than one million children in Canada are estimated to have below grade-level reading skills.

27% of kids start Grade 1 without some of the early developmental skills they need to be able to read.

Investing in pre-school education has a much higher rate of return than investments made in later years of a child's education, or in adulthood.

Approximately 25% of Grade 3 children in Canada are not reading at grade level.

Pandemic disruptions in children's learning are forecast to cause a 30% increase in socioeconomic skills gaps.

About Me.

Hello! My name is Julia, the founder of Readiate, an online early reading intervention and tutoring service. I am a BC-certified teacher and former special education assistant with years of experience in whole-class, small-group, and one-on-one literacy instruction. I created Readiate to address the literacy gap that I saw first-hand and the challenges that children face as they progress through school without foundational reading and writing skills. Readiate uses a fun, play-based, multi-sensory approach to learning that is accessible from anywhere with an internet connection. The service is designed for children ages 4-10, but I encourage anyone who is interested to reach out, regardless of age.

At Readiate, the focus is on building strong foundational reading and writing skills in a way that is engaging and enjoyable for children. The online platform allows for flexibility and convenience, making it easy for families to fit tutoring sessions into their busy schedules. Readiate is an excellent choice for parents who want to give their children the best possible start in their academic journey.

Evidence-based practices that work

01 Assessments

With any new student, we start with the Sunrise package. This package contains an info session and two assessments. I keep these assessments fun and play-based! There is no timing and no writing or reading required. To children, these assessments feel like fun word games and we stop before the point of frustration. The purpose of these assessments is to determine what your child already knows and which skills to practice.

  • Phonological Awareness Skills Screener

    • word discrimination (telling two words apart); rhyme recognition and production; syllable blending, segmentation, and deletion; and phoneme recognition, blending, segmentation, and deletion.

"I’m going to say two words that rhyme. Cat rhymes with hat, and boat rhymes with
coat. Now you do one. Tell me a word that rhymes with hop?"

"I'm going to show you some letters. Each letter makes a sound. If you know it, shout it out! If not, that's okay, we'll practice."

02 Sessions

After the Sunrise assessments, I will create an individualized plan for your child.
I base my sessions off of the Jolly Phonics program. I have seen children grow in leaps and bounds using this program! It is a fun, multi-sensory phonics instruction approach which is seen in many classrooms. Across many studies, a common theme is that the program enables children to learn to read twice as fast. They have an average reading age that is 12 months ahead after one year. Check out their website by clicking on the link to the left for more details and evidence.

Jolly Phonics lessons follow a set routine, outlined below. Throughout the session students will have stories read to them with recurring characters, sing songs, do actions, read a super simple book, and play a game! The only materials required for the student is a whiteboard and markers or a piece of paper and pencil. Everything else is either shown by the teacher or projected onto the screen.

All done!

03 Post-Session

After each session, your teacher will update a shared document with the progress that was made! Here we will also include links to optional printable activities to further supplement each session. Rather than searching for an email after every session, all you have to do is open the link and see the updates. We recommend adding the link to your bookmarks for easy access.
